The home insurance sector has grown rapidly since 2004, with 73 per cent more providers in the market today, meaning more choice for consumers. According to a report from Defaqto, an independent financial research company, the home insurance industry is going through a challenging period for insurers, which are struggling against an influx of new competitors, but one of opportunity for customers. A “number of challenges and a period of transition” are currently facing the home insurance industry, says Defaqto, following a 73 per cent rise in the number of providers in the last six years, driven by comparison websites and major retail brands like supermarkets entering the market. Sacramento, Calif. (AP) — The insurance industry has given more than $1.5 million in indirect contributions to support the Republican candidate for state insurance commissioner, raising criticism among certain groups.
Both candidates say they will not accept direct contributions from the industry they would regulate.
The money is flowing instead to the California Chamber of Commerce JobsPAC, which is airing advertising for Republican Mike Villines and against Democrat Dave Jones. Both are termed-out members of the state Assembly.

A federal judge in Florida announced that a lawsuit could proceed that claims that requiring Americans to buy health insurance is unconstitutional. Twenty states are involved in the lawsuit. US District Judge Roger Vinson rejected an effort by the Obama administration to have the case thrown out, according to the Los Angeles Times. Vinson’s decision was similar to one made by a federal judge in Virginia. “To say that something is ‘novel’ or ‘unprecedented’ does not necessarily mean that it is ‘unconstitutional’ or ‘improper.’ There may be a first time thing for anything,” Vinson wrote in his 65-page ruling, according to the LA Times.
