If you are one of the lucky people who finds himself in the enviable position of secure home ownership, you may be thinking about improving your home. It may or may not be a good idea. Here are some tips. A very important issue is whether the economy has left your house with enough value and equity to consider improving it. If it makes sense, here are some excellent home improvement tips. Before going any further, prepare a budget. The amount of money you decide to put into a remodelling project should be determined by a number of factors, your age, employment status, and how long do you plan on staying at the house.
• One idea to consider, if you are retired and elderly, is spending a budgeted amount of dollars for improvements that can make life easier for you as you grow older and health issues arise. Items like safety bars in the bath, more functional showers and baths, hand rails along stairways, ramps instead of stairs and stair lifts to upper floors make sense. The idea is to make the place as comfortable, usable and safe as possible for when advancing age restricts and inhibits easy movement. If you plan on staying in your home, these measures will be appreciated down the line, sooner than later in many cases.
• Before you make cosmetic changes and improvements, evaluate the mechanics of your home. This may be the best way to spend your money. Depending on the age of your home and how you have maintained it over the years, there are a number of areas that may require attention and improvement. Near the top of that list of improvements are furnaces and air conditioning systems. With the cost of energy increasing year by year, consider replacing old and inefficient furnaces with a high-efficiency furnace. You might consider doing the same with your air conditioning system. Today’s high SEER units are significantly less expensive to operate than older units. By replacing either or both components, you can be assured of years of care-free living as well as a considerable amount of savings on energy costs.
• If you are considering interior improvements, it has been shown that your best return and most satisfaction come from updating and remodelling your kitchen, followed by bathroom renovation. Both of these areas are considered style elements and are the rooms people like to spend time in. New updated appliances, granite counter tops and solid wood floors are good improvements as are updated tile and bathroom fixtures. For a fresh and relatively inexpensive upgrade, consider completely repainting interior walls, incorporating many of the new colour schemes in vogue today. Take a close look at your carpeting. Replace it if shoddy, or have it cleaned.
