At the start of the new year, many companies will be reviewing their health insurance and other business insurance policies to make sure they are up to date with new regulations and provide the best possible coverage for employees.
This is especially true with the arrival of the winter flu season, as many employers may find an unexpected rise in the number of workers taking sick days.
In some parts of the country, this season’s flue rate has been higher than others. For example, the Iowa Department of Public Health indicated that the number of people receiving influenza hospitalization has doubled in the past week, The Omaha World-Herald reports.
Department medical director Patricia Quinlisk said that while the number of flu cases may only represent a small number of the total population, the increase in recent weeks may be affecting many area businesses already struggling in today’s weak economy, the news source says.
In this climate, many companies could benefit by encouraging workers to take precautions, such as receiving flu shots. In addition, employers could take steps such as sending employees health reminders that encourage frequent hand washing and other basic tactics that could help combat illnesses.
